Compute, Network & Storage by Application
Looking at the underlying application infrastructure will tell us if recent usage changes are causing a problem.
It is important to understand if changes to our application result in an unexpected change to the infrastructure. When there is a problem, we need to make sure the compute, network, and storage environment is responsive and available. Digging into the Linux OS, we see that the connectivity links are up and show nonzero throughput and activity, however there is a high memory utilization and filesystem utilization that suggests the problem may be related to compute and/or storage capacity allocated to the application.

Taking a look at the different components in the infrastructure gives us a holistic view of the health of the application
Sometimes the best way to diagnose an application problem is to look at all of the components in its infrastructure, such as the web and application servers, the database, and the operating systems they’re running on. Views like this one help you sort out the bad apples in your applications. In this image we can quickly see that our Linux OS has a memory usage issue, our application database has a full cache, and our Websphere Application Server (WAS) is not responding correctly. Jumping to a compute, network, and storage view will give us more information about the issues with the Linux OS, or a diagnostic deep dive will get us to the root cause of the slow WAS response time.
What is misbehaving, and how are users affected?
The application dashboard lets us look at requests by status bar chart. In the image we can see that we have a series of bad requests, as indicated by the presence of red in the bars. The average application response time graph to the right confirms that transactions have started to slow down dramatically resulting in frustrated users. Looking at the list of the top 10 transactions by volume, we see a problem with the Search function.
If transaction volumes were increasing as average response time went up, that might be something we would expect to see. But in this case, a dramatic change in response time with steady volumes suggests a problem.
