This is the first part of a two part article on IBM Endpoint Manager and Enterproid Divide. It is assumed that the reader is familiar with IBM Endpoint Manager or as it was previously known BigFix. Since IBM acquired BigFix there have been numerous enhancements and improvements including the introduction of Mobile Device Management.
IBM have established a partnership with Enterproid to complement their MDM solution so that they are able to provide a secure container to allow the distinction between personal and business apps and data.
“Containerization” is about securely separating corporate and business data and apps. Also known as “workspaces” or “sandboxing,” containers provide a cleaner separation on a mobile device between work and play. So even in the case that the device itself has no unlock passcode and no corresponding security policies, the secure container of business apps on the phone cannot be accessed unless the appropriate passcode is entered. And inside the container the user is able to share data between business apps (e.g. copy and paste text from an email into a CRM record), but corporate IT would of course not want data inside the container copy-and-pasted onto a non-container app such as Twitter or Facebook – i.e. data leak prevention. And of course corporate IT should have the ability to wipe the container if the device is lost or the employee leaves the organization, but not delete music, photos, personal apps, etc. that the employee put on the phone. Think of it as “virtualization” but for mobile.
To get an appreciation of Divide and what it can do I would like to break Divide down into its two separate versions. This first part will discuss the differences between divide basic and divide enterprise. The second part will discuss the divide integration with IBM Endpoint Manager.
What it does for you?
- Download the Enterproid App from Apple’s App Store or Google Play http://www.divide.com/download/
- Install the app
- Configure with your corporate address details
- You will receive an email with a link and a temporary password telling you to go to https://my.divide.com
- Put in your email address and the temporary password from the email. This will force a password change
- Create your new password
- And you are in. Self service for your personal device (or any devices with your email associated with them).
This is all cloud based as a service and provides a free self service capability. The self service will allow you to see where your device is, lock the container, reset your container screen lock and completely wipe the container containing your corporate data. None of which affects the personal area on the device. The container itself gives you a secure area on your device with an email client, contacts, calendar and browser – essentially giving your device dual persona.
There is a paying version that gives you much more and full management capabilities over multiple devices which requires an extender for IBM Endpoint Manager. Here are the main differences between divide basic and divide enterprise.
Divide v Good
- The Divide interface has a native look compared to learning a new interface.
- The Divide cloud solution requires no servers at the customer to install or maintain.
- The Divide solution has fewer points of failure.
- The Divide solution is less expensive per user.
- The Divide solution doesn’t require a special more expensive data plan.
- The Divide solution doesn’t require programming changes or fees for apps to run in the container.
Divide is a next generation solution purpose built for BYOD, whereas Good is a first generation solution purpose built for email synchronisation.
